Continental M17 — Quick Help & FAQ

Tap any topic below to expand. Built from the official M17 instruction books.
CM17 Sewing Manual PDF | CM17 Embroidery Manual PDF

Getting started: power, start/stop & foot control +
Plug the power cable into the rear socket, then the wall outlet, and turn the power switch ON. The front Start/Stop button can run the machine (it glows green when ready), but it’s disabled if a foot control is plugged in. Use the speed slider to cap your top speed; pressing the foot control varies speed up to that cap.
Bobbin winding & threading (quick view) +
Raise the pop-up spool pins, route thread to the bobbin winder tension, seat the bobbin on the spindle and press the Bobbin Winding button. Insert the wound bobbin in the top-loading rotary hook and follow the guide/cutter. For upper threading, follow the numbered path, then use the automatic needle threader.
Accurate Stitch Regulator (A.S.R.) & free-motion setup +
The M17 includes A.S.R. with multiple feet (closed-toe, open-toe, clear-view, ruler). Attach the A.S.R. holder and select A.S.R. in Sewing Applications for regulated free-motion. For ruler work, attach the QR/ASR-QR foot and select Ruler Work mode for proper height and movement.
Dual Feed (AcuFeed Flex) & precision piecing tools +
For layered or slippery fabrics, mount the appropriate Dual Feed holder (twin or single) and foot (AD/OD/UD/SD/VD/ED/HP2). For precision piecing, use the HP needle plate with HP/HP2 foot to guide consistent ¼″ seams and straight feeding. Adjust presser-foot pressure as needed.
Embroidery hoops, sizes & setup (RE46d, SQ28d, more) +
Attach the embroidery unit and tables, choose the correct hoop (e.g., RE46d up to ~11″×18″ class, SQ28d 11″×11″, RE20d 5.5″×7.9″, SQ10d 3.9″×3.9″; ASQ27d quilting hoop included in bonus kit). Use stabilizer per fabric, insert fabric taut, then mount the hoop on the carriage and confirm hoop size in the edit window. Magnetic clamps are included for larger hoops.
Positioning Marker (LED) & on-screen editing tips +
For precise placement, fit the Positioning Marker foot (PM), connect the cable, and adjust the LED pointer alignment as shown in the manual. In the embroidery Editing window you can move, rotate, resize, group, change sewing order, trace the design, and use color grouping before stitching.
Presser foot lift, knee lifter & extra-high clearance +
Raise/lower with the button or lever; press higher for an extra-lift when swapping thick hoops or layers. A knee lifter is included for hands-free control—great for pivoting and quilting. Avoid turning the handwheel while the foot is in the extra-lift position.
Built-in help & quick references on the screens +
Tap the Help key for step-by-step visual guides to common operations. Use the Stitch Reference and Function Menu to review stitch charts, machine settings, wireless LAN setup, and more right on the touchscreens.
Thread cutter switch (foot control add-on) +
The separate toe-switch mounts beside the foot control and trims top/bobbin threads after sewing. It’s adjustable left/right/forward/backward on the base plate; press for >0.5s after the Start/Stop is green. Bundle cables with the included tie for safety.
Maintenance: cleaning & needle plates +
Periodically remove lint from the hook area and thread path, and switch to the Straight-Stitch or HP plate as needed (use the release and soft-close mechanisms). Keep the bobbin area clean for best stitches; consult the troubleshooting pages if patterns distort.

As with all of our machines, we also strongly recommend a yearly maintenance cleaning and inspection by a qualified technician in your area to keep your machine running in peak condition.
Battery/clock note & safety +
Remove the shipping tape from the rear battery cover before first use and set the clock. The unit uses a CR2032; follow the manual’s battery safety guidance and keep coin cells away from children.
